Your GreenDeal STC RCTI may show separate Pass-on, Referral and GST amounts. This article explains what they mean and how they are calculated.
1️⃣ What is the “System Owner's STC Unit Price”?
When creating an STC Job in GreenDeal, you may be asked to enter the System Owner's STC Unit Price.
This is the STC Unit Price being passed on to the System Owner.
GreenDeal uses this information to determine whether there is a difference between the STC Unit Price paid by GreenDeal and the STC Unit Price passed on to the System Owner.
If there is a difference, it may appear as a Referral Fee on your RCTI.
2️⃣ Why does my RCTI show “Referral” and “Pass-on”?
Here is a simple example:
GreenDeal STC Unit Price: $38/STC System Owner's STC Unit Price: $26/STC
The difference is:
$38 − $26 = $12/STC
Your RCTI will therefore show:
Pass-on: $26/STC — the STC value passed on to the System Owner.
Referral: $12/STC — the difference between the GreenDeal STC Unit Price and the amount passed on to the System Owner.
For example, for 166 STCs:
Item | Unit Price | Quantity | GST | Total |
STC – Referral | $12.00 | 166 | $199.20 | $2,191.20 |
STC – Pass-on | $26.00 | 166 | $0.00 | $4,316.00 |
Total Amount: $6,507.20
3️⃣ How does GST apply?
If a residential System Owner is not registered for GST, the assignment of STCs is not treated as a taxable supply. As a result, GST credits cannot be claimed on the purchase of the STC assignment.
The full value of the STC rebate is not passed on to the residential System Owner. Where the Retailer retains part of the STC value, the retained amount may be treated as a Referral Fee. If part of the STC value is retained by the Retailer, the retained amount may be treated as a Referral Fee, and GST may apply to this amount.
Using the example above:
Referral: $12 × 166 = $1,992.00 GST: $1,992 × 10% = $199.20
For more information about GST and STCs, please refer to the Australian Taxation Office:
📌 Note: If the System Owner is a commercial property owner and both the System Owner and Retailer are registered for GST, the transaction is treated as a normal taxable supply for GST purposes.
4️⃣ When is there no Referral Fee?
If the STC Unit Price paid by GreenDeal is fully passed on to the System Owner, there is no difference between the two prices.
For example:
GreenDeal STC Unit Price: $38/STC System Owner's STC Unit Price: $38/STC Referral Fee: $0
If you select “consistent with the price sold to GD” when completing the assignment creation form, this means that GreenDeal pays the Retailer and the Retailer passes the same STC Unit Price on to the System Owner.
In this case, no Referral Fee will apply.
