FAQ – New CER Critical Labelling Requirements for Battery Installations

Written by service@greendeal.com.au
Updated over a week ago

This FAQ explains the new critical safety labelling requirements introduced by the Clean Energy Regulator (CER) for solar battery installations, as well as the updates within GreenDeal Apps.

For more details, retailers and installers are encouraged to read the following materials:

1. Background

CER has introduced new compliance requirements for critical safety labelling in solar battery installations.

These requirements are applied in CER's photo evidence assessment.

2. Key Dates

  • 1 March 2026 – New CER critical labelling requirements take effect

  • All jobs lodged on or after this date will be strictly assessed under the new requirements

3. Impact on Installers

For all jobs installed on or after 1 March 2026, installers must capture and upload clear photos of all required safety labels. These photos are mandatory and form part of the compliance evidence.

Required Photos

3.1 Meter Box (Closed)

Provide a clear photo of the closed meter box showing both "PV" and "ES" signages.

3.2 Meter Box (Open)

Capture a photo of the open meter box, including all switches and the inside of the meter box cover. The photo must show the required labels:

  • Warning Label

  • Shutdown Procedure Label

  • Alternative Supply Label

If there is an extra switchboard outside the main meter box, also take a separate photo of the extra switchboard.

Ensure:

  • Labels have legible text

  • Labels are placed in a compliant location

  • Labels and switches are not obstructed by objects, glare, or poor lighting.

3.3 Shutdown Procedure Label

Take a clear and close-up photo of shutdown procedure label.

At least one shutdown procedure label should be attached to the switchboard within the meter box. You may also place more shutdown procedure labels on the inverter or beside the battery.

If the inverter is located away from the switchboard, you must provide a separate photo of the additional shutdown procedure label.

3.4 Battery Labelling (Front)

Take one photo showing the front of the battery and all warning signs located immediately around the battery.

3.5 Battery Labelling (Sides)

Take two photos showing the sides of the battery.

3.6 Additional Warning Signs

Capture a photo of any additional warning signs installed away from the battery, where applicable.

4. Impact on Retailers

Retailers are advised to review existing and upcoming jobs, set a proper installation schedule, and ensure installers are trained on the new labelling requirements prior to 1 March 2026.
